CSSP Chat April 2020: The CARES Act - Provisions, Protections & Process

Thursday, April 16th 12:30 pm EDT

Due to the changes happening as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the Council of Scientific Society Presidents (CSSP) has changed the topic for our next CSSP Chat. The value in improving collective understanding around the CARES Act passed by Congress last month, and being able to share what we have learned with you seemed to be a much more timely subject for this Chat. In our search to identify moderators who can help us all better understand this legislation we are pleased that Amir Eyal, CEO of Mylestone Plans, a financial services organization with a strong division focused on the needs of the nonprofit community, and Jennifer Shieh, Chief Scientist in the Office of Investment & Innovation with the Small Business Administration have accepted our invitation to moderate our April 16th CSSP Chat at 12:30 pm EDT: The CARES Act - Provisions, Protections and Process.

Though we are sharing some of the questions being asked, Jennifer Shieh has offered to review questions you send in advance in order to be able to have the most accurate answers available when we meet. We're asking you to please send your questions so we can make sure to get them to her, allowing her enough time to fulfill that offer. Here are some questions to start this process:

  • Is this the right opportunity for your organization?
  • How does a society begin the application process?
  • What are the different components of the legislation and are there restrictions that could affect your organization when applying?
  • If our current cash flow is solid, but the projections are difficult to make, would my society be eligible for the loan?
  • There have been statements made about a loan having the potential for being "forgiven" thereby in essence turning it into a grant. How would that process work and are there thoughts around the possibility for that happening?

Our Chat series are most constructive when all attendees contribute unique experiences and questions, prompting ideas the moderator may not have considered. These sessions allow for open conversation - sincere collaboration. We look forward to receiving additional questions in advance, but if you'd prefer to simply join us for another lively exchange of thoughts, ideas and suggestions we look forward to that as well. It is each unique participant's experiences, and/or desire to share wisdom, along with challenges faced, that add immeasurable value to the CSSP Chats. Please join us, adding your input and insight during this, and all CSSP Chat conversations.

Registration is open (there is no cost to participation) and we look forward to seeing your name added to the growing list of science leaders who continue to participate during CSSP Chats. The CSSP Chat discussions have been organized on Bluejeans.com, a very easy to use video chat application that takes moments to set up and access. Please allow yourself 5 - 10 minutes to get set up if you've never used this platform. Or you can go directly to the website and use the meeting ID - 624 277 361 to login from their web-based access.
