Leadership in the Next Era

Dr. Marcia McNutt, new President of the National Academy of Sciences and former Editor-in-Chief of Science magazine, will speak on the priorities of NAS in the coming era and how CSSP can be involved.

Dr. Arati Prabhakar, Director, DARPA, will discuss technology, innovation, and competitiveness in a speech on “Breakthrough Technologies for National Security.”

Session 4 – Leading in the Next Era: Association Best Practices Focus on Meetings

Organized by Madeleine Jacobs, President & CEO, CSSP

All scientific and technical professional societies are seeking new and innovative ways to increase revenues and attendance at their conferences and meetings while enhancing their missions. In this session, two professional association executives will describe the approaches their societies are taking. This is a highly interactive discussion.

Mary Ward-Callan, CAE, Managing Director, Technical Activities, IEEE, will talk on “N3XT: Engaging New Audiences.” In this illuminating talk and discussion with attendees, Ms. Ward-Callan will describe how “the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to the advancement of technology for the benefit of humanity,” has expanded and enabled dynamic, nimble, flexible, diverse, and global communities to share, collaborate, network, debate and engage with one another. She has done this by overseeing and spurring the development of innovative and technically vital forums for the discussion, development, and dissemination of authoritative knowledge related to traditional technologies, while focusing more of IEEE’s resources towards serving the professionals working on emerging and disruptive technologies.

Denise Creech, Director, Member and Scientific Advancement Division, American Chemical Society, will discuss the impetus behind a new innovative conference designed to engage international audiences and enhance global cooperation among scientific societies. The American Chemical Society is a leading organizer and sponsor of the Atlantic Basin Conference on Chemistry (ABCChem), to be held on January 24-27, 2018, in Cancun. It is loosely modeled on the highly successful Pacifichem Conference held every five years in Hawaii.

Dr. Jeremy Berg, new Editor-in-Chief of Science, will speak about the leading issues the science enterprise faces in the new era from his perspective of Editor-in-Chief and his previous positions.

Dr. Miyoung Chun, Executive Vice President of Science Programs at The Kavli Foundation, will give remarks about “convergent science”–a newly emerging area in which scientists from vastly different disciplines come together to solve important problems. For example, scientists from planetary and ocean sciences recently met to explore common areas of research. Attendees know the need for multi-disciplinary/cross-disciplinary research, but how do we move forward in making that as reality? How do scientists from different disciplines assure collaboration? Attendees will discuss this topic over lunch with the hope of outlining paths forward.
